Bakuchiol: The Trending Natural Retinol Alternative

We’ve all heard of retinol and it’s ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; however, this isn’t quite the “miracle” product some may lead you to believe.  The use of retinol can cause more harm than good in some cases, causing severe side effects such as dryness or flaking skin. Additionally, regular retinol users can experience extreme inflammation or develop acne, rashes or peeling skin during first regular usage.

What is Retinol?

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that have been extensively studied for their anti-aging properties. Retinoids vary in range from low concentrated retinoids which are available over the counter and high concentrated products only available by prescription.

These ingredients have been proven to stimulate collagen production. Which will reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Incorporating retinol or retinoid-based products into your skincare routine can reduce the visible signs of aging, however it is important to closely monitor the usage of retinol for first time users. Due to the harsh side effects mentioned, We don’t include retinol in our products at Beauty Kitchen!

What is Bakuchiol?

If you would prefer a natural alterative to retinol (we do!), Bakuchiol is considered as retinol’s gentler, natural sister by dermatologists. Bakuchiol is a natural plant extract from the Psoralea Corylifolia plant which has been used in ancient Chinese medicine for decades. A study conducted in 2018 showed bakuchiol to have very similar results to retinol, it combats the signs of aging due to high amount of antioxidants which counteract free radicals in the skin which damage cells causing dryness and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

Bakuchiol vs Retinol
Because it’s not vitamin A derivative, Bakuchiol can be used twice per day and does not break down under UV rays or make skin more sensitive like it’s sister retinol. A 12 week study with 44 patients showed that both users of retinol and bakuchiol had decreased wrinkle surface area and reduced hyperpigmentation. The only difference recorded was retinol users reported skin feeling “scaly” or stinging.
Our Abyssinian Oil Night Halo contains Bakuchiol and is the perfect alternative to achieve retinol like results without the side effects!
